Step by step guidance on how to update your VisitScotland.com web listing

Scotland is working its way through the route map to welcome visitors once again. And visitors are keen to know that businesses are safe and ready to welcome them.

In order to provide visitors with reassurance there are three things we recommend you update on your web listing via your Extranet:

1. Let visitors know you’re good to go  

After you have completed the national self-certification scheme We’re Good to Go and Safe Travels, tick the new boxes provided to confirm this to visitors. Get the instructions for letting visitors know you're good to go.

2. Let visitors know what to expect

Update your description to provide COVID specific information and highlight what COVID-safe measures you’ve put in place and what else is open nearby. Get the instructions for letting visitors know what to expect.

3. Let visitors know you’re open

When your business reopens, tick the ‘We are open' box so that we can promote you, and visitors will know they can book with you. Get the instructions for letting businesses know you're open.

In July 2020 when tourism began to reopen, VisitScotland.com saw a rapid uplift in site visitors*, with search traffic up 72%, referrals passed onto accommodation web booking engines increasing by 187% to over 20,000, and a further 215,000 referrals to businesses own websites via their web listings. We expect the 2021 reopening will see similar trends.

It's important to ensure your web listings are up to date to convert visitor interest. 

Good to Go / Safe Travels

Once you’ve completed the national self-certification scheme, We’re Good to Go, and registered for the international Safe Travels stamp, tick the new boxes to let visitors know. This will provide confidence that you’ve taken all the necessary steps to deliver a safe stay.

Visitors will be able to filter on our website to find businesses identified as We’re Good to Go and Safe Travels, so be sure to take this action.

  1. Complete the We’re Good to Go self-certification process and register for the international Safe Travels stamp.
  2. Log in to your Extranet
  3. Select the product listing you want to update by clicking on the business name
  4. Click the three grey lines in the top left corner and select ‘Edit details’Screenshot of process described above
  5. Click Facilities on the left-hand side
  6. Under the heading ‘Coronavirus Information’ tick the Good to Go and Safe Travels boxesScreenshot of the above description
  7. Click save at the bottom of the page 

Update your description

Update your description with changes to your facilities and services, which visitors may want to be reassured of before they visit.

  1. Log in to your Extranet 
  2. Select the product listing you want to update by clicking on the business name
  3. Click the three grey lines in the top left corner and select ‘Edit details’Screenshot of process described above
  4. Click 'Descriptions' on the left-hand side
  5. Select ‘Extranet Edit’ channel – please note the text in the ‘Default’ channel is not visible on your web listingScreenshot of process described above
  6. Click in the Description box or ‘Edit Description’ – a new pop up box will appear
  7.  Add additional information visitors need to know before they visit you
  8. Click save and close
  9. Click save at bottom of the page

We are open

Once you are physically open for visitors, it’s time to let them know. This will allow visitors to be able to filter on our website to identify those businesses which are definitely open.

  1. Log in to your Extranet 
  2. Select the product listing you want to update by clicking on the business name
  3. Click the three grey lines in the top left corner and select ‘Edit details’Screenshot of process described above
  4. Click 'Facilities' on the left-hand side
  5. Under the heading ‘Coronavirus Information’ tick the 'We are open' boxScreenshot of process described above
  6. Click save at the bottom of the page

You can also add further, day-specific, opening information in the “Openings” section of your Extranet. Click on the three dots to the right of your opening information or use the ‘Actions’ box to add opening details. 

It’s important that, in addition to the opening information on your VisitScotland.com web listing, you update all key sources of information on your business - for example, update your google knowledge panel and of course your own website and social media channels.

Make sure you highlight your Good to Go logo and Safe Travels stamp alongside your Quality Assurance logo on your own website and social media to reassure visitors of the clear processes in place to welcome them back safely once travel restrictions are lifted.

Additional COVID-19 Response facilities have been added to your Extranet. Please select those applicable to your business and they will appear on your web listing overnight.

Additional information visitors need to know

Visitors want to know more before they go. Here’s what we think you should add to your description to give them the information they need before they visit. 

Temporary changes to keep you safe: 

  • Revised opening hours if applicable
  • Short summary of safety measures that visitors need to be aware of, such as physical distancing, mask-wearing, hand sanitiser provided
  • Information about changes to offering for visitors, e.g. spa closed, function suite currently unavailable, take-away menu available, toilets open/closed, outdoor food and drink area, parking facilities, accessibility changes
  • Additional information for visitors such as advance booking requirements, any limits on visitor numbers, local public transport changes
