The North - about the film

The North is a film produced by Dutch production crew (The Tuesday Studio) which follows two characters as they hike the West Highland Way and the Cape Wrath Trail. Along the way, they connect with nature and reconnect as friends.

Scotland’s landscapes and nature, our trails, and the immersive experience has been captured in a cinematic format. The final result on screen is exactly what the cast and crew experienced, and the environments and weather they contended with to create this film.

This captured the attention of our Multimedia team when they were approached to work on footage for The North.

Working with the producers

Scotland’s majestic mountains, footsteps in the sand, capturing Scotland through a lens and sharing that story is how we connect audiences with places, experiences and products.

Natural beauty is the number one driver of global travel decisions - people are seeking more meaningful travel experiences and we know that Scotland can offer this in abundance.

For our talented multimedia team, who are responsible for capturing and curating content that inspires the hearts and minds of people across the world, working with this production crew was a great opportunity to generate some new and different footage of Scotland that’s good for the soul.

And, some of that footage can be seen within one of our recent videos - 'A guide to hillwalking in Scotland' which can be found on our YouTube channel.

We also partnered with digital creator, Joshua Adeyemi, to shoot the middle section of the video. Presenter, journalist and writer Rosie Morton provided the voice over.

Importance of screen tourism

Screen tourism (or set-jetting) is about providing a visitor with a personal experience of a place they're familiar with through film or TV.

We know screen tourism is a major motivator for visitors to come to Scotland. Our 2023 Scotland Visitor Survey shows that one in five visitors said that film, TV, or literature was a source of inspiration when deciding on Scotland.

In our recent consumer sentiment tracker "to get away from it all and have a rest" and "family time or time with my partner" were the leading motivations for a short break or holiday in Scotland. With "walking / hiking" and "trying local food" the top activities.

Screen productions, such as The North, create intrigue and inspiration, around walking and the outdoors, and help create opportunities by attracting visitors to experience the locations they've admired on screen.
