New Sustainable Destination Project

We are delighted to be supporting VisitScotland and participating destinations through this pilot. The project recognises the important role Scotland’s regions play in shaping a more sustainable visitor economy, and the commitment shown by local partners is a strong foundation to build on. 

GDS-Movement works with destinations around the world, but this programme is especially meaningful because it combines international good practice with a strong understanding of Scotland’s tourism landscape. We look forward to working with partners to turn ambition into practical action, strengthen collaboration and support tourism that benefits places over the long term.

This pilot is an exciting opportunity to test a new approach to supporting destinations with their sustainable growth plans. Working with four destinations at different stages of sustainable development will help us understand what support is needed and identify approaches that can be scaled across Scotland.

Through stakeholder workshops, in depth diagnostic reports and global best practice case studies, we’ll work with destination partners to identify priorities, key actions and measure progress.

Using the GSTC framework will enable national benchmarking and help ensure tourism development is aligned with internationally recognised sustainability standards. The insights from this pilot will help shape how VisitScotland supports sustainable destination development in the future.
