The Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere features on the long-running BBC Radio Scotland show, Out of Doors.

Working in collaboration with the Biosphere, we approached the programme in the wake of the evaluation report on the success of Scotland’s UNESCO Trail.

The evaluation report found that the goal of encouraging collaborative working between Scottish UNESCO designations and the wider tourism sector "was fully achieved".

It revealed that visitor surveys conducted in 2022 and 2023 found that around a quarter of visitors to Scotland from key European markets were aware of the trail, rising to a third from the UK and North America.

Between 31% and 46% of visitors stated Scotland’s UNESCO Trail was an important factor in their decision to visit a UNESCO site.

Listen to the podcasts

Presented by Mark Stephen and Rachel Stewart on Saturday mornings, Out of Doors explores the great Scottish outdoors each week and is available on the Scotland Outdoors podcast.

Our approach resulted in two episodes, broadcast on 29 November 2025 and 6 December 2025, featuring Dumfries and Galloway and the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere.

You can find both episodes on the Scotland Outdoors podcast in the BBC Sounds app.
