Connecting Canada to Scotland

VisitScotland has welcomed the announcement that Canadian airline WestJet will return to Glasgow Airport in 2026 with the launch of a new direct service from Toronto.

The move marks a boost to Scotland’s transatlantic connectivity and supports the ambitions for sustainable tourism growth and international collaboration.

Starting 15 May 2026, WestJet will operate four weekly flights between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Glasgow International Airport.

This marks the airline’s return to Glasgow for the first time since 2022 and reflects growing demand for travel between Scotland and Canada.

The importance of Canadian visitors

Canada remains one of Scotland’s most valuable international tourism markets.

In 2024 alone, Canadian visitors contributed £135 million to the Scottish economy. With approximately 4.8 million Canadians claiming Scottish ancestry, the cultural and historical bonds between the two nations continue to drive strong demand for travel.

The announcement comes at a time of renewed momentum for Glasgow’s international profile, following recent news of resumed direct flights to New York and the city’s upcoming role as host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

VisitScotland will continue to work with WestJet and other partners to promote Scotland as a  must-visit, must-return destination for international visitors to help drive the visitor economy, growing its value across Scotland.

This very welcome announcement sees WestJet further expand its service network into Scotland, creating more opportunities for Canadian travellers to fly directly into Glasgow; an ideal gateway to the West and the wider country.

This development will be warmly welcomed by both travellers and tour operators.

Canada has long been a key inbound market for Scottish tourism, with strong family ties driving repeat visits and enabling travellers to spend time with loved ones.

We’re also seeing growing interest from visitors without personal connections; those drawn to Scotland for its outdoor adventures, rich cultural heritage, and the chance to engage with local communities and experience authentic Scottish hospitality.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with WestJet and inspiring even more visits across Scotland.
