The Princess Royal will officially open the Orkney 2025 International Island Games.

Today (21 May 2025) it's been announced that HRH The Princess Royal will attend the Opening Ceremony, which will take place at Kirkwall’s Bignold Park on 12  July 2025 to officially open the Games.

From 12–18 July 2025, Orkney will welcome around 2000 athletes from 24 island groups across the globe to compete in 12 sports, including; Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Cycling, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Sailing, Squash, Swimming, and Triathlon. 

This marks the first time Orkney has hosted the Games. It will be a historic occasion for Orkney, as it hosts an event which is as much about community and camaraderie as it is about competition.

With just over a month to go until we welcome the world, anticipation is ramping up as local businesses, tourism and community groups are preparing to showcase the vibrant spirit and culture of Orkney. We are on the brink of a truly unforgettable event that will celebrate Orkney’s rich heritage, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality which will make this a memorable event for everyone involved, and we are looking forward to extending our famous Orcadian welcome to Princess Anne."

The Games is supported by principle funders the Scottish Government, sportscotland and Orkney Island Council, and is also made possible by the local Orkney community. Over 900 volunteers have taken on important roles, from stewarding events to supporting athletes and spectators. Their dedication showcases the warmth and hospitality of Orkney.

The Games begin with an Opening Ceremony and Athletes’ Parade in Kirkwall on Saturday 12 July, which will be hosted by Lorraine Kelly and Stewart Bain. 

Some of the highlights throughout the competition will include the triathlon in Stromness, cycling road races through the West Mainland and the half marathon in Kirkwall. Taking place at venues across Orkney, participants will showcase their talent and determination while creating lasting memories for spectators and participants alike.
