When we talk about the success of Scotland’s tourism and events industry, we often focus on world-class landscapes, iconic experiences and cultural heritage. But at the heart of every great visitor experience is something equally important - the people who bring it to life.

It's their commitment, passion and professionalism that can live long in the memory of our visitors and it’s the businesses that recognise this that are playing a key part in driving Scotland’s visitor economy.

The success of Highland-based hotel, The Torridon, named Employer of the Year at the Scottish Thistle Awards, is a powerful reminder of the difference investing in people can make, not just for businesses, but for Scotland as a whole.

We caught up with The Torridon’s owner, Rohaise Rose-Bristow to learn what it is like to be a Thistle Award winner and how The Torridon is helping make Scotland a better place to visit, live, work and do business.

What does winning Employer of the Year at the Scottish Thistle Awards mean to your business and your team?

Winning Employer of the Year was an incredibly proud moment for us and a powerful affirmation that we are doing the right things as a business. For our team, it reinforces that their wellbeing is genuinely prioritised and that they can have confidence in us as an employer. It’s recognition of the culture we’ve worked hard to build, one where people feel supported, valued and inspired to grow, and it means a great deal to everyone who is part of The Torridon.

How would you describe your workplace culture, and what makes it special

Our workplace culture is driven by a strong set of values, being driven, daring, passionate and acting with integrity. These are not just words; they guide how we operate day-to-day and have become second nature across the team. What makes it special is that these values are lived and felt at every level, creating an environment where individuals feel empowered, motivated and proud to be part of something meaningful.

What’s one thing you do as an employer that has made the biggest difference to your people?

One of the most impactful initiatives has been implementing an independent, third-party engagement survey. This gives our team a safe and honest platform to share feedback, helping us continually evolve and improve. It has been instrumental in strengthening psychological safety across the business, ensuring people feel heard, respected and confident in contributing their ideas.

How does investing in your team shape the experience you deliver to visitors or customers?

When you invest in your people, it naturally translates into the guest experience. Our team feels empowered and trusted to take ownership, which allows them to deliver truly personal and thoughtful service. Guests can sense the culture immediately, there’s a warmth, authenticity and attention to detail that comes from a team who feel valued and confident in what they do, ensuring every guest feels genuinely special.
