A spotlight on Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh has topped the list of top attractions in the world – a prestigious title voted by TripAdvisor’s many travellers who’ve journeyed the globe experiencing some of the world’s amazing sights, and adventures. With The Real Mary King’s Close also ranked among the best, this recognition signals a proud moment for the capital and a powerful endorsement of Scotland’s visitor economy.

Hear from Chief Executive Franck Bruyère on what this global recognition means for the Britannia team and for Scotland’s reputation as a world-class destination.

What does being named Tripadvisor’s top attraction in the world mean for The Royal Yacht Britannia?

Being named Tripadvisor’s No.1 attraction in the world is truly a landmark moment for The Royal Yacht Britannia, and a first for any UK attraction, which makes it even more special.

This global recognition has only been possible thanks to our visitors, over 320,000 each year and almost 8 million since opening in 1998, whose wonderful feedback and reviews have helped place us firmly on the world stage. We are incredibly grateful for their continued support.

Reaching number one is a tremendous achievement and a real tribute to our team’s unwavering commitment to excellence. It reflects the care, pride, and attention to detail that go into every single visit.

Of course, we don’t stop here. We remain focused on delivering memorable experiences that truly offer time well spent, while continuing to raise the bar for what a world-class attraction can be.

What are your priorities to ensure you deliver a world-class, quality visitor experience?

At Britannia, delivering a world-class visitor experience is underpinned by a clear focus on accessibility, quality, people, and sustainability.

Accessibility is central to our approach. We are proud to offer a complimentary audio guide in 34 languages, alongside BSL and ASL tablets, Braille materials, and a dedicated children’s tour available in multiple languages. Inclusivity is not an add-on – it is essential, and we want every visitor to feel welcome and able to fully enjoy their experience.

We also have an uncompromising commitment to quality. We are constantly looking at how we can refine and elevate the experience, always with the visitor at the heart of every decision.

Our people, of course, make all the difference. The warmth, knowledge, and professionalism of the team bring Britannia to life - and it is their passion that creates those truly memorable moments for our visitors.

And finally, sustainability. We are deeply committed to embedding responsible practices across all areas of our operation, ensuring we protect this very special asset for generations to come.

What do you believe this accolade reflects about Britannia, and Scotland’s attractions sector in delivering world-class visitor experiences?

This accolade, alongside our 5-star award, highlights not only Britannia’s commitment to excellence but also the strength of Scotland’s attractions sector as a whole.

It demonstrates that Scotland is competing confidently on the global stage, no other country has two attractions ranked in Tripadvisor’s top six worldwide. This achievement shines a powerful international spotlight on both Edinburgh and Scotland’s world-class visitor offering.

Above all, it reflects the exceptional quality, authenticity, and warmth of Scottish hospitality, which continues to set us apart as a leading destination for visitors from around the world.

What role does Britannia play in supporting the wider visitor economy in Edinburgh and Scotland?

Britannia plays a significant role in supporting the wider visitor economy in both Edinburgh and Scotland by contributing to the city’s global appeal, local employment, and community investment.

The accolade rightly recognises Edinburgh as a destination, and we are proud to share this success with our industry peers. Together, we help position the city on the international stage - championing Edinburgh as a must-visit destination and showcasing the exceptional quality and diversity of its visitor experiences.

As one of Scotland’s leading visitor attractions, The Royal Yacht Britannia attracts over 300,000 visitors each year, alongside thousands more who attend our evening events. This consistent footfall not only supports our own operations but also drives wider economic benefits across hospitality, retail, transport, and accommodation sectors throughout the city.

Britannia is also an important local employer, with a team of around 200 people drawn from the surrounding community. Beyond this, our ongoing success enables us to invest time and resources into local initiatives, supporting organisations such as the Water of Leith Conservation Trust and The Croft Community Garden at Leith Links, with further community partnerships continuing to develop.

In these ways, Britannia contributes meaningfully to Edinburgh’s visitor economy - helping to sustain jobs, attract international audiences, and reinvest in the local community while reinforcing the city’s reputation as a world-class destination.
