Driving visitors to Scotland begins with the creativity and passion of Scotland’s tourism businesses. From crafting authentic experiences to ensuring these products reach international travellers, every step matters in shaping Scotland’s reputation as a world-class destination.

All the time, consumer demand for new products and experiences is growing and evolving, and you don’t need to be a big or established business to tap into that demand. There are opportunities for new businesses and new ideas too.

International tourism to Scotland has demonstrated strong growth in the past two years. We’re supporting businesses to develop new bookable products and experiences that meet international visitor demand as well as guiding them through the various routes to reach international audiences and markets.

Our approach includes a range of workshop-style events, and webinars aimed at connecting suppliers with the travel trade.

Scotland’s New Experiences event

One standout initiative is our “Scotland’s New Experiences” event, now in its third successful year. This low-cost, entry-level workshop in Edinburgh connects Scottish suppliers, who are new to working with travel trade, with Destination Management Companies (DMCs) who can help them access and sell to international markets.

Based in Scotland, DMCs are an easy and highly effective way for businesses new to selling in overseas markets to start to generate international sales. It can also be a very cost-effective way of dipping your toe into working with the travel trade.

This year’s event, held on 3 and 4 December, brought together 40 Scottish businesses and 19 DMCs representing tour operators worldwide.

Participants had the chance to:

  • showcase their bookable products directly to DMCs
  • grow experience in pitching their business to an international audience
  • gain insights into market demands and global travel trends
  • understand what’s required to work successfully with travel trade

The format was developed in response to growing demand from DMCs for new, unique, and responsible products. By introducing emerging trade-ready businesses to global markets, we help address this demand while supporting the Scottish tourism industry to grow sustainably.

Domestic and international travel trade – whether tour operators, DMCs, travel advisors or online travel agents – play a vital role in Scotland’s tourism ecosystem.

Choosing the right partners can deliver benefits beyond higher-yield visitors, including better targeting and managing visitor flow throughout the year. We work year-round to navigate the travel trade landscape, identifying operators who best fit Scotland and its tourism businesses and making meaningful connections between both.

The immediate feedback from this year’s event was overwhelmingly positive from both Scottish businesses and DMCs, reinforcing the value of creating these connections.

By continuing to foster collaboration and innovation, we ensure Scotland remains a destination that inspires travellers and supports the businesses that make those experiences possible.

Feedback from suppliers

“Visit North Lewis thoroughly enjoyed VisitScotland’s DMC Event on 4 December. It was a great opportunity to showcase our excursions to an excellent range of buyers, learning more about the industry and gaining experience in these types of events to get North Lewis on the map.”

“The VisitScotland travel trade event in December has been an incredible springboard for my small business. The event provided me with access to key travel trade decision makers. Not only did I have the opportunity to showcase my offer to these industry professionals, but I also got to listen to them and learn what they are looking for. The support from VisitScotland was really beneficial. The team provided information on how the day would run, how and what to prepare and provided opportunities to discuss and prep ahead of the event."

“The DMC event hosted by VisitScotland at the W Hotel was a brilliant event. I’ve attended this event the last 3 years and it’s a great opportunity to meet new suppliers to the industry to bridge gaps in product portfolios. All of them offered something new with their own spin on product we may already offer as well as some completely new offerings.”
