Programme launch for Glasgow 850

Glasgow City Council has officially launched its Glasgow 850 programme taking place throughout 2025. It will be a spectacular year-long celebration marking 850 years since the city gained Burgh status in 1175.

The milestone year is packed with events and activities that honour Glasgow’s rich history, dynamic present and ambitious future. All those with a connection to Glasgow are invited to join the celebrations, share their stories and to become tourists in their own city.

As well as a series of signature events, the programme includes everything from arts and culture, to sports, food and drink, festivals and historical exhibitions to smaller community-led events delivered by Glasgow City Council and partners across the city.

Signature events

A series of signature events have been created to mark the city’s 850 year. The events include:

  • Taste the Place: Across April, more than 40 hospitality venues will take part in a series of free self-guided experiences designed to celebrate Glasgow’s food scene. Each experience has been created to offer inspiration for discovering new foods and culinary experiences, all served from independent businesses who call Glasgow home
  • Clyde Chorus: At the end of May, the city will host a three-day multi-genre musical event with a focus on homegrown and local talent, taking place at iconic venues and attractions along the River Clyde including the SEC, SWG3, The Briggait and The Savings Bank
  • People’s Palace pop-up: From June to November, a free pop-up exhibition will tour various communities across the city, bringing Glasgow’s social history to life through historic artefacts, paintings, prints and photographs

This is just a small snippet of an extensive programme of events across the year. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to join the celebrations across the year.
