Edinburgh stars in a new BBC series

Based on the best-selling books by Ian Rankin, Rebus reimagines the iconic character John Rebus (played by Richard Rankin) as a younger Detective Sergeant, drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turns personal.

The six-episode series features striking locations throughout the capital. When asked about Edinburgh as the location for the show, Ian Rankin, Author and Executive Producer for the show answered, “Wherever you go in Edinburgh, you get those iconic locations. Anybody who knows the city knows how photogenic it is. It’s beautiful and Gothic.”

Rebus aired on Friday 17 May. All episodes are available on BBC iPlayer.

Some locations and businesses you’ll spot within the series include: The Mound, The Oxford Bar, The Meadows, Hilton Edinburgh Carlton, Pirlous Café, National Museum of Scotland, and the National Library of Scotland.

TV and film visitor appeal

In our recent Scotland Visitor Survey 2023, TV programmes featuring Scotland was cited as a source of inspiration to one in ten visitors.

Programmes mentioned ranged from Outlander, to the Hairy Bikers to Monarch of the Glen as a source of inspiration for visiting Scotland, with a particular strong influence on our long-haul visitors.

*As part of a YouGov omnibus survey of over 2000 adults for Scotland's Year of Stories in 2022 respondents were asked about their favourite fictional characters connected to Scotland, 10% said Inspector Rebus.

One of the significant connections Scotland has with TV and film is the lasting influence on visitors to go to the locations, well beyond the premiere or release year.

I have always loved reading books that take place in Scotland, when I got there, I felt very much at home.  Almost like I knew the place.  I recognised names of places I had read in novels.
