In this week’s Winners Wednesday feature, we shine the spotlight on Dunkeld-based Land Rover Experience Scotland, Scottish Thistle Award National winner of the Best Outdoor or Adventure Experience in March 2020 which celebrates businesses that give unforgettable, quality and authentic experiences to their visitors.

Land Rover experience

Land Rover Experience Scotland offers its guests the chance to drive a top-of-the-range Land Rover or Range Rover through demanding terrain and over exciting obstacles, guided at every stage by world class instructors. Visitors learn new skills, build confidence and challenge themselves, at the same time as having great fun and access to some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. They also offer Young Off-Roader Experiences for 11-17 years olds, perfect for a family day out. Their experiences are centred on Land Rover’s ‘tread lightly’ approach, upholding a long-standing commitment to conserving and protecting the countryside.

The business welcomes around 10,000 guests a year and works closely with local accommodation providers to encourage many of them to extend their stay in Highland Perthshire for a few days.

They were commended by judges for their commitment to careful land management through the use of top of the range, low-emission and hybrid vehicles. They were also impressed by their commitment to business development and local engagement.

Winning the Scottish Thistle Award for Best Outdoor or Adventure Experience was a wonderful and unexpected highlight of what turned out to be a very challenging year in 2020. Scotland is the home of outdoor adventure and we were up against some excellent providers at both the regional and national stages.

As lockdown struck, we had to temporarily close our business along with most of the Scottish tourism sector. When restrictions lifted in the summer of 2020, we were able to re-open, but had to look at a completely new way of operating now that our instructors could not be in the cars with our guests.

Flexibility and adaptability were the watchwords, and we completely re-designed our experiences to a guided convoy format, with instructors outside the vehicles rather than inside, interacting with our guests and giving instruction and guidance at every point of our off-road driving course.

Our team managed this brilliantly, moving quickly and smoothly to a completely different way of working, and it is all credit to them that our new Land Rover Experiences worked so well.

Our guests, who had been locked down for several months by this time, were keen to get back in the vehicles, and we had consistently excellent feedback about the way that we were managing the situation without limiting the fun or excitement of the off-road drive.

We also put more stringent cleaning protocols in place, with each vehicle disinfected inside and out after every guest, and our reception procedures were adapted to make sure that we could provide the friendly welcome we are known for alongside paperless transactions and social distancing. This too was appreciated by our guests, and our review scores have remained solidly at five-star.

As we moved through the different stages of the pandemic we had to adapt what we do and how we do it, several times, and this is likely to be the case for the next few months too.

But we are confident that we can continue to deliver an outstanding experience, and that for our guests, their day with us will be one of their most enjoyable times in an otherwise difficult few months.

Throughout everything, our focus has been on excellence of customer service – making sure our guests enjoy a day to remember for all the very best of reasons. Every member of our team played their part, with new roles, new procedures and a new way of working – and every team member pulled together to make it work, with a smile!
