Enjoying Scotland's wide range of outdoor activities is an important part of our visitors' experience, whether as part of a trip or as the sole purpose for a holiday or break in Scotland. A range of resources are available for a number of specific activities. The key resources are signposted below. 



A sector review of Scotland's walking market was conducted by VisitScotland in 2017 to form an accurate picture of the consumer profile of those who undertake this activity whilst on a trip in Scotland.

Cycling Tourism

The following is a review of domestic cycling tourism in Scotland. The review uses information from the national monitors, The Great Britain Tourism Survey (GBTS), Great Britain Day Visits Survey (GBDVS) and VisitScotland data.

The Value of Cycle Tourism Report from Transform Scotland

A report into the value of cycle tourism was published in June 2013 by Transform Scotland, the national sustainable transport alliance.


Activities Undertaken by International Holiday Visitors

Our partners, VisitBritain, have carried out analysis of International Passenger Survey data on the activities undertaken by international visitors to the UK.


The report published in 2013, includes a section on outdoors and sport activities undertaken in Scotland.

A Scottish Snowsports Sector Review was commissioned by development agencies Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish Enterprise in 2011. A copy of the report is available online at http://www.hie.co.uk/.
