The ScotSpirit breaks 2017


Following the success of the ScotSpirit breaks 2016, we are working again with The Family Holiday Association and partners from across the tourism industry to provide vulnerable and disadvantaged families with a short break or day out in their own country.


Dozens of tourism businesses large and small have already signed up, generously providing accommodation, transport and access to visitor attractions so that families can enjoy a break across between August and October.


These are families that are on low income and are struggling with some of the toughest challenges that life can bring. They haven’t had a break for several years and in many cases, the families have never had a break together at all.


The breaks are distributed by the Family Holiday Association, which works with a local charities and support organisations in Scotland to identify the families that will benefit most from the breaks.

How can I support the ScotSpirit breaks?


If your business can support the ScotSpirit breaks, we still need accommodation and visitor attraction tickets for September and October. So if you have spare capacity or would simply like to offer some of your product to enable a family to get a break, here’s what can help:


Accommodation: two night breaks during weekends or school holidays in September and October, in any location easily accessible by public transport.


Visitor attractions and experiences: any family friendly attractions in any location easily accessible by public transport, with tickets for access during weekends or school holidays during September and October.

Last year, industry support made a real difference to the lives of many families:

  • 90% were able to cope better after the experience
  • 97% visited parts of Scotland they hadn’t visited before
  • 93% felt more confident to try more breaks in the future
  • 88% felt more optimistic about the future
  • 100% had fun and were able to create happy memories


What do tourism businesses think?


Last year over 30 tourism businesses supported the ScotSpirit breaks. Their feedback was highly positive, emphasising how easy and quick it was to donate accommodation, transport tickets or access to visitor attractions and experiences.

  • 94% supported it because it was a good cause
  • 88% of staff were proud of their company for participating
  • 77% said these breaks are good for business and reputation
  • 59% said the breaks supported existing CSR policy
  • 100% would support again and recommend to other businesses


What is the Family Holiday Association?


For over 40 years, the Family Holiday Association has provided breaks for families struggling with issues such as disability, bereavement, poverty, mental health issues and domestic violence.

The evidence shows that spending time together away from their daily struggles can be life-changing for these families:

  • The majority of families it supports have never before been on a family holiday.
  • It works with over 150 Scottish charities and supports organisations to identify families who could benefit from a break
  • The charity helped provide short breaks and days out to 635 Scottish families in 2016 (1340 over the past three years)
