Business case study - Laggan Outdoor, Gatehouse of Fleet

Laggan Outdoor Activity Centre offers exciting experiences for visitors and recreational activities for all the family, in the heart of Dumfries & Galloway.

The centre’s adventurous spirit and focus on customers recently won the centre the Best Outdoor/Adventure Experience award at the Central South West regional Thistles awards.

We caught up with Director and Founder Duncan McConchie, who took a break from making major upgrades to the site facilities to discuss why the Spirit of Scotland is demonstrated throughout their business.

What does the Spirit of Scotland mean to you?

To me, the Spirit of Scotland is seen in our unique approach to life and the attitude of our people. It’s a uniqueness forged from our history, our land and our weather.

Which one of the Spirit of Scotland values do you identify with?

I see myself and our business in all of them!

Fun is one of our key values. It’s the essential part of every activity we run and in everything we do as a business. We want our customers to enjoy their time at Laggan Outdoor and take away memories filled with fun, excitement and adventure. It’s also clear that our team enjoy what they are doing and have fun every day.

I also have to identify with determination, humour and spark, which have all been essential at different points of our business on our journey from the family farm in 2007 to the dedicated outdoor activity centre that it is now.

What about your business makes you identify with this value?

The sense of fun at Laggan Outdoor is so clear on the smiles on the faces of our customers, throughout the process from first contact to arrival on site. I also see it in the smiles on the faces of our enthusiastic team as they interact with our visitors and run our activities.

We only ever want to host activities that inspire fun. From archery, which was our first activity, to clay pigeon shooting, mountain boarding, zorbing and segways, all our activities enable visitors to experience an adventure.

In the last few years we’ve also taken our activities up a notch and installed one of Europe’s longest Zip wires, which spans 820 metres and lets our visitors experience hurling downhill at speeds of up to 45 mph with a fantastic view across the Solway Coast. Since we opened the Zip in 2012 it’s been enjoyed by over 20,000 people from all over the world, including my 96 year old Grandmother!

Last year we launched our brand new attraction, the Human Slingshot. Experiencing acceleration of 0 – 60 mph in just over a second, this allows adrenaline seekers to take adventure and fun to a whole new level. We had our bit of fun with the launch event too – with the assistance of Olympic, World and European Champion Gold Medallist, Lizzy Yarnold, the first participant on our officially opened Human Slingshot was a six foot tall haggis!

What do you do to showcase your fun to your customers?

You get a sense of fun as soon as you arrive at Laggan Outdoor through the positive attitude from our team and their approach to have fun while maintaining a safe environment. We approach everyone as being unique – from our own team and customers alike.

At Laggan Outdoor, we’ve #ScotSpirit and we show it to our customers day-in-day-out!
