The Technology Directorate brings together IT and digital to ensure technology not only supports the organisation but enables transformation. We balance innovation and change with the responsibility of delivering secure, resilient and well-governed services. 

We are modernising our technology platforms, data capabilities, and digital services to support our Corporate Plan and meet the wider direction of the public sector.

The directorate is responsible for the delivery of IT and digital services, cyber security, technology solutions, and business-critical systems across the organisation.

This includes the internal services and solutions that enable efficient operations, as well as outward-facing digital platforms and websites that enhance the organisation's digital presence and support the delivery of high-quality services.

Working as one team, we collaborate across all functions to deliver the organisation's strategic objectives. Together, we ensure that technology, data and digital capability, are embedded as drivers of organisational performance, informed decision-making, and sustainable visitor economy growth.

Chief Technology Officer - Mike Slack

Mike, formerly Head of IT, now leads the Technology Directorate, unifying IT and digital teams to drive innovation and efficiency.

Since joining in 2008, he’s applied over 35 years of senior IT leadership experience across public and private sectors, including IT services and manufacturing. He holds an MSc in Business Management from Warwick University and multiple professional accreditations. 

Mike has been instrumental in leading our digital transformation, replacing legacy systems with cloud-based platforms that enhance collaboration, mobility, and security.

He has also worked extensively with Scottish public sector partners, supporting major business change initiatives, and also serves as a Trustee on the BTB Pensions Scheme Board.

Departments within this directorate

Our Technology Directorate consists of the following three departments.

Technology Strategy, Planning and Delivery

Colleen Henderson leads this team, which helps ensure our technology investments deliver real value for the organisation, our colleagues, and the tourism and events sector.

Acting as the bridge between business needs and technology solutions, the team works with stakeholders across VisitScotland to identify priorities, plan future investments, and deliver products and projects that support our strategic goals.

The team ensures that technology initiatives are effectively governed, appropriately funded, and delivered in a way that maximises organisational benefit.

The department's responsibilities include:

  • Technology Strategy and Planning, shaping the future direction of technology
  • Programme and Project Delivery, prioritising, planning, and delivering change initiatives that improve services, experiences, and business outcomes
  • Product Ownership, ensuring our digital products continue to meet user needs, deliver value, and evolve in line with organisational objectives
  • Business Analysis and Design, working with colleagues to understand business challenges, identify improvement opportunities, and define requirements for effective solutions
  • Enterprise Architecture, helping systems, data and processes work together effectively
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI), exploring and implementing opportunities to improve efficiency, innovation, and decision-making

Through effective planning, governance, and delivery, the team helps VisitScotland make the most of its technology investments and deliver better outc omes for colleagues, partners, and visitors.

Information Technology

Technology Solutions, led by Allan Henderson, designs, delivers, and supports the digital systems and services used by VisitScotland's colleagues, visitors, businesses, and partners.

From our websites and online services to internal business systems, the team ensures technology is reliable, secure and easy to use.

The department comprises the following specialist teams:

  • Product Engineering
  • Solutions Engineering
  • DevOps and Platform Engineering
  • Test and Quality Assurance

Working closely with other teams across the Technology Office, Technology Solutions develops and improves digital services that help to achieve our strategic goals.

The department develops and maintains both systems and platforms, applying agile delivery practices where appropriate to maximise value and responsiveness to organisational needs. This includes key platforms such as VisitScotland.com, the Business Support Hub, and VisitScotland.org.

By using customer insight, stakeholder engagement, user feedback, and data, the team continually enhances digital services to provide the best possible experience and deliver value for everyone who uses them.

Technology Services

Head of department, Stewart Keggie, and team deliver secure, reliable, and high-performing technology services that support organisational delivery, drive efficiency, and enable continuous improvement across the organisation.

This includes:

  • service delivery and technology support for internal and external users
  • cyber security, governance and access management
  • infrastructure, networks, cloud services and core technology platforms
  • asset lifecycle management, automation, innovation, and digital transformation initiatives

The team also plays a strategic role in ensuring technology aligns with organisational objectives. By managing systems, networks, data, and user permissions with a strong focus on security, Technology Services maintains resilient and well-governed environments.

Through modern collaboration tools, cloud solutions, AI, and automation, the team identifies opportunities to improve services, enhance operational performance, and support the organisation's evolving needs.
