Lonely Planet Best in Europe 2019: Shetland

Travel authority Lonely Planet has revealed that Shetland is listed in its top 10 ‘Best in Europe’ destinations for 2019.

Best in Europe 2019 has been compiled by Lonely Planet's travel experts and features the most exciting destinations in Europe to visit this summer.

The travel authority praised Shetland for its “outstanding coastal trails, diverse wildlife (from otters to orcas), craggy headlands, fabled fish and chip shops, the proud, friendly locals, and the annual Up Helly Aa celebrations each January”.

Shetland is the only UK destination to be selected, with other places such as High Tatras in Slovakia, Madrid in Spain and The Arctic Coast Way in Iceland making the list.

Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2019: Highlands & Islands

The Highlands and Islands (including Outer Hebrides, Moray Speyside and Aberdeenshire) have been named a top 10 region in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2019.

Best in Travel is Lonely Planet’s flagship global multi-channel campaign with an estimated reach of around three billion. It’s made up of four core categories – top 10 countries, cities, regions and best value destinations which are promoted via the hardback travel annual (the bestselling travel annual in the world) and a dedicated content hub on lonelyplanet.com (11 million unique users globally).

The Highlands and Islands are the only UK region to feature in any of the categories for 2019.
