When we went into lockdown four months ago the idea of restarting Scottish tourism on 15 July seemed optimistic. So, it’s fantastic that today we press the button and will save some of the summer season. The industry has faced its biggest-ever crisis and is starting to emerge from lockdown.
The recovery will be long, but we know that the fabulous businesses in Scotland will do everything they can to provide that great Scottish welcome. Reopening won’t be the same for all businesses, and many jobs have been lost, so it’s important that we recognise that as we move forward to try and restore our industry.
Today we’re launching a Scotland-wide marketing campaign to get Scots to consider a holiday at home – including an emotive film reminding us how “Only in Scotland can travelling so little make such a big difference.” Activity will be phased to ensure that businesses can open with the support of local communities and with the safety of staff and visitors in mind.
I firmly believe that tourism is a force for good, providing a boost to the economy and jobs and helping with community issues like depopulation and well-being. I also know that the warm Scottish welcome will be at the heart of the recovery of tourism – something we are renowned for across the world.
