The COVID-19 crisis has brought extremely challenging times for all but has created a moment in time for businesses to reflect on what comes next and how the future we pursue could be a better one. During Climate Week Scotland (14 - 20 September) we're sharing case studies from businesses already taking steps to protect the natural environment through responsible tourism initiatives.

Nithbank Country Estate, award winning five star country house B&B in Dumfries & Galloway, has an exceptional commitment to responsible tourism, particularly in relation to working with the local community and wildlife conservation.
The impressive estate is the only B&B in Dumfries & Galloway to hold a gold award from Green Tourism, alongside the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Certification Mark.

From homemade scones, muesli, granola and jams (with fruit grown in Nithbank’s kitchen garden and orchard), to apple juice grown and pressed locally, Nithbank considers zero food miles and quality local produce as a key part of its success providing guests with an authentic local experience. Nithbank is set in ancient woodland which is the perfect setting for wildlife, where precious habitats are protected. Red squirrels, pine martens, owls, red kites, woodpeckers and bats can be watched by visiting guests.

The guest experience is really important to us, we decided early on, that despite managing the extra demands of COVID-19, we would not compromise on the luxury touches we provide. It's more important now than ever, that our guest‘s experience surpasses their expectations.
Post-lockdown, we offer more, not less. That's providing guests with more luxuries, more advice and more of our time! We have a big job to do, to encourage our visitors to take in more of our beautiful surroundings, savour their experiences, spend locally and ‘stay a while' which is key to sustaining our business and local economy.
And its working… since lockdown our guests are staying longer, exploring our recommended routes and enjoying our local produce, with advance bookings coming through well into winter. It has been a very positive start for us.
