A total of seven Edinburgh and Glasgow restaurants have been named in this year’s Travellers’ Choice Awards for Restaurants, announced by the world’s largest travel site, TripAdvisor.
Appearing eighth, ninth and tenth in the Travellers' Choice Favourite Fine Dining Restaurants UK list are three Edinburgh restaurants - Aizle, Number One at The Balmoral and Restaurant Martin Wishart.
Edinburgh's Makar Gourmet Mash Bar took the top spot in the Travellers' Choice Everyday Dining Restaurants UK category, with Mother India's Cafe in Edinburgh appearing fourth on the list, and Glasgow's Paesano (Miller St) and La Lanterna appearing fifth and ninth on the list respectively.
This year marks the first time ever in the Travellers’ Choice Awards for Restaurants seven year history, that the awards have included an Everyday Dining category, in addition to the existing Fine Dining category. This new category awards restaurants that provide great meals for any occasion, designed to surface the UK’s best-rated restaurants to go with friends or family without breaking the bank.
The Travellers’ Choice Awards honour travellers' favourite dining establishments worldwide, based on the millions of valuable reviews and opinions on TripAdvisor. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for restaurants around the world, gathered over a 12-month period.
Tourism is all about consumer choice and these awards show that Scotland is a cut above the rest when it comes to dining.
I am delighted that seven Scottish restaurants made it into the top 10 restaurant awards – it’s particularly exciting to see the Makars on Mound Gourmet Mash Bar in Edinburgh take the top spot in the everyday dining list.
There are many first-class food and drink experiences to be enjoyed across the country and our latest insights show, without a doubt, the importance of food and drink to the visitor experience. Almost all – 92% - of visitors dine out while on holiday. As well as the quality and variety of food on offer in our restaurants, visitors are also sure to find the warmest of welcomes.
And it is encouraging to see that one of the winners - Restaurant Martin Wishart - is part of VisitScotland and the Scottish Government’s Taste Our Best scheme which connects the places people visit with first-class food and drink experiences through a quality mark which stands out to locals and visitors alike. It is supported by Scotland Food and Drink and was designed to promote the use of Scottish produce within the tourism industry and recognise businesses that offer great Scottish food and drink experiences.
