Local Authorities

Local authorities play a major role in tourism. They are a source of funding for VisitScotland's Network Offices, as well as providing a wide range of services to businesses and visitors.

Local authorities have responsibility for roads, planning, tourism signposting, health & safety and licensing, all of which have a direct impact on an area''s potential success as a tourism destination. They control the main public amenities - museums and galleries, theatres, parks and sporting facilities and conference facilities.

Some local authorities have their own tourism officers or representatives who deal with issues relating to tourism within their respective local authority areas, normally in liaison with the local VisitScotland Network Office.

Scotland's local authorities are co-ordinated at a national level by the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) which exists to promote the interests of its council members and to communicate their collective views and concerns to Government.
