Our quarterly Business Travel Dashboard is a snapshot of industry performance. It also provides a commentary on the drivers influencing consumers and business now and in the future. Please note that this paper represents business travel of all types including individual non-discretionary business travel which is not influenced by the work of the business tourism industry.. It is not therefore a report specifically covering the MICE market (Meetings, Incentive, Conference & Exhibitions) or “Business Tourism” as targeted by VisitScotland’s Business Events.

The following paper is a summary of the tourism performance of Scotland’s Business Travel and Tourism sector. Through the use of data sources such as; the International Passenger Survey (IPS), and the Great Britain Tourism Survey (GBTS), insights have been drawn to gain an understanding of the sectors volume, value, and visitor profile.

 

Please note that this paper is only representative of Business Travel of all types including individual non-discretionary business travellers as recorded by VisitScotland’s data source. It is not a report on the state of the Meetings, Incentive, Conference & Exhibitions (MICE) market or “Business Tourism” as targeted by VisitScotland’s Business Events.

  • 2.5m business trips were made to Scotland in 2012 (-7% vs 2010)
  • Business tourism was worth £782m to Scotland in 2012 (+8% vs 2010) and accounted for 18% of the total tourism expenditure to Scotland
  • Spend per night by business visitors is 1.5 times higher than that of leisure visitors
  • Great Britain accounts for 69% of total tourism expenditure, down from 73% in 2011
  • The largest overseas markets in 2012 for business tourism in Scotland measured by volume of trips are Germany, USA, Norway, Netherlands and France. In terms of spend they are USA, Germany, Norway, Ireland and France
