Space Tourism, New Experiences and the Changing Meaning of Luxury

Just imagine…..

In 2030 Gleneagles Space Station will be the world’s most exclusive resort. Catching the Virgin Galactic from Auchterarder, space tourists will fasten their seat belts and hear the rockets roar. As the spaceship reaches the stratosphere, they will gaze down to Planet Earth for the most exclusive view in the world. Sound a bit far fetched’ Well it isn’t. Space tourism is just a metaphor to describe the consumer’s desire for new experiences and luxury markets. With rising affluence, consumer values have changed, with a lessening emphasis upon material possessions and an increasing concern for experiential and quality of life issues, hence the desire for new experiences. In the latest edition of VisitScotland’s Tomorrows World publication, Dr Ian Yeoman discusses these trends and now it will contribute towards Scotland’s ambitions to increase the economic value of the industry by 50% by 2015. So beam me up Scottie
