Glasgow Accommodation Review

This 2005 audit of tourism accommodation in the City of Glasgow updates earlier versions concluded in 1999 and 2001. This seven year period has seen the city witness unprecedented change in the scale and profile of its accommodation stock.

In 2005, Glasgow had:

  • nearly 7,000 bedrooms in the Serviced sector
  • and another 3,800 in the Non-Serviced sector (10,668 total bedrooms).

Total tourism sleeper capacity now totals approx. 19,000 (1999 = 13,769) - a significant factor in the city’s success in attracting major conferences and events, etc.

Of note are:

  • the net growth in the total number of Hotel bedrooms
  • the net decline in the Guest House and B&B sectors
  • the growth in the Serviced Apartment category
  • the almost total replacement of stock in the Campus sector to newer, mainly single with en suite rooms
  • net growth in stock has focused on the city centre rather than the periphery, although the mix has changed in all areas studied

The city’s tourism accommodation stock has been a dynamic sector of the economy and one which seems set on a path of continued growth, both in terms of supply and demand.
