The Netherlands

The Dutch outbound market Netherlands is now ranked as the world’s 11th largest market in terms of international travel expenditure. It has an exceptionally high spend per capita on outbound travel, as holidays are very important to Dutch people and there is a high propensity to travel and to holiday abroad. Scotland’s visitors Scotland has a strong appeal to the Dutch because of its mountains and wide open spaces – the opposite of their homeland. The key holiday type is touring – including exploring the scenery, taking walks, sightseeing and relaxing. Cities are also popular destinations. They are more inclined towards independent travel and are strong users of the internet for researching and booking trips. Camping and caravanning are popular accommodation choices for Dutch holidaymakers both for Scotland and in general. VisitScotland’s commitment to the Green Tourism Business Scheme and sustainability practices resonates with this market, which is very conscious of environmental issues and seeks ‘green tourism’ solutions. Visitors to Scotland mainly reside in the four Dutch main conurbations of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague and so direct flights and ferry links to Rosyth (from neighbouring Belgium), Hull and Newcastle provide important access routes. VisitScotland continues to work in partnership with operators to exploit the promotional opportunities of new route launches.
