Filming in Scotland

Scotland offers spectacular and versatile film locations, filled with breathtaking scenery and culture.

The six major cities are surrounded by:

  • amazing wildlife
  • beautiful beaches
  • lochs
  • dramatic glens
  • historical buildings and towns

Easy access around the country and minimal location fees, professional facilities and innovative funding opportunities make Scotland a competitive and film-friendly location.

Set-jetting

One of the by-products of being an established location for filming is ‘Set-jetting’. This is where film fans will visit the locations of their favourite movies. One in five overseas visitors to the UK are inspired to visit by images they have seen in films and on TV.

There is nothing like a wide-screen hit movie for selling a location to prospective holiday-makers – and Scotland has its share of major and award-winning titles including:

  • The Da Vinci Code
  • Braveheart
  • The Harry Potter series
  • Rob Roy
  • Shallow Grave
  • Trainspotting
  • Chariots of Fire
  • Stardust
  • Local Hero
  • The Wicker Man and many more.

VisitScotland works hard with its partners to ensure that Scotland benefits from the positive impact of the film industry.
