Foot and Mouth

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) was confirmed on a number of farms in Surrey, beginning in August.  A local response is underway in Surrey and a National (GB) movement ban has been put in place as a precautionary measure whilst investigations are undertaken.  FMD has no significant human health implications, but is a serious and notifiable disease of livestock and can cause significant disruption to the livestock sector and the wider rural economy and society.

VisitScotland recognises the concern that this situation presents to farming and rural communities. We are in regular contact with the Scottish Government to assess the situation and ensure that all appropriate steps are taken to minimise any potential impact on tourism.

It is important to emphasise that the Scottish countryside is open for business and that people should not change any plans to visit. The restrictions that are in place are for the movement of live stock, and as such we would not anticipate the current case in Surreyhaving any impact on Scottish tourism.
