How to get involved

The mission of the Green Tourism Business Scheme is to ensure the industry’s long term future and its public reputation by encouraging business practices that are sympathetic to the environment.

As the case studies show, there are many specific benefits that going green can bring to your business. Cost savings, particularly from energy management and efficient use of resources can be significant.

The market place is changing and green conscious customers are on the increase. You could encourage customer loyalty, gain new business and increase your community profile through good environmental management.

Even the simplest measures can contribute towards obtaining an award under the Green Tourism Business Scheme – your company may already be undertaking many of the basic practices, giving you a head-start.

To take part in the scheme:

  • You must be a member of the VisitScotland Quality Assurance Scheme
  • Ask the Green Tourism Business Scheme for an application pack which includes the criteria and which you should then complete and return. The criteria will provide details of the measures required for each level.
  • You will also receive a workbook containing a considerable amount of information, advice and useful websites, contacts and organisations that will help you improve your environmental performance.
  • If you are successful you will be entitled to a certificate, a wall plaque (made from Scottish wood from a sustainable source) and to use the Green Tourism Business Scheme logo in your marketing material as well as free listing on the GTBS website.
  • Grading visits are made by appointment and will be carried out every two years.
