Biodiversity - how we can help
Scotland’s biodiversity is amazing
From natural superstars like the golden eagle, red squirrel and
salmon, to magnificent ancient pinewoods, or to the water in your
local pond teeming with miniature life. The variety of living
things in our small country is simply wonderful.
Keeping all this biodiversity in good health is very important
for clean air and water, for growing food, and for the local parks,
woods, hills, rivers and beaches we enjoy.
So how can we help keep our biodiversity special? Have a go at
these ideas:
Buy seasonal
Try buying food that’s in season from local
producers when you do the weekly shop for groceries. This supports
Scottish farmers and helps reduce our carbon footprint.
Experience nature on your doorstep
Get outdoors more often and discover the great nature close to
where you live. Visit the local park, follow a footpath sign -
wildlife is never far away.
Garden for life
Plant native wild flowers and trees in your
garden to give food and shelter to wildlife. Encouraging bees
and other insects will help pollinate crops on farmland nearby.
Help with a wildlife survey
Get involved in building up a picture of the
state of Scotland’s animals and plants.
Tell someone about it
If you’ve seen a cool insect or bird, planted
some wildlife-friendly trees, or just been inspired at a local
event, don’t keep it to yourself!
Get others involved in biodiversity
Take friends out to explore local green
spaces. Get your workplace to plant for wildlife around its
buildings. Encourage your local school to visit nature
reserves.
