Web Booking Engines
With 64% of visitors booking accommodation online it is
essential that accommodation businesses provide this option.
A booking engine (or property management system), is a
web-based system that allows businesses to accept bookings online
either through their website or through a third party booking site.
These systems offer administration and management facilities, where
businesses can add room availability and prices.
VisitScotland displays external
availability on visitscotland.com for accommodation bookings.
The new and improved business listings on the site have been
designed to reflect what visitors are looking for and drive as many
referrals as possible to businesses. VisitScotland.com provides a
global platform, reaching up to 20 million users and generating 2.7
million industry referrals each year.
To date, we work with 15 different
booking engine providers and this list will continue to grow.
Working with these booking engines gives a wider choice of booking
platforms for businesses to display their availability thereby
presenting consumers with a wider choice of places to stay.
To appear in an accommodation search that
includes preferred dates you must be working with an integrated
booking engine. Approximately 1/3 of accommodation providers with a
listing on visitscotland.com already do so, meaning that they have
the opportunity to tap into over 1.5 million searches for
accommodation availability each year.
Benefits of moving to a supported booking engine
- Your room availability and pricing will only need to be
maintained in one place
- Your live room availability will be searchable on www.visitscotland.com and
will be displayed (alongside your pricing) on the site when someone
carries out an accommodation search with the date specified. They
will then be able to complete the reservation on the booking page
provided by your Booking Engine.
- Visitor Service Advisors in the VisitScotland iCentre
network are able to view live availability on www.visitscotland.com, but use
different technology to complete the booking. To be able to take
bookings via the iCentre, an accommodation provider should
ensure that they have entered rooms and guide prices onto the
VisitScotland Extranet - please see page seven of the
Essential Extranet User Guide for more information.

Choosing a Booking Engine
Here are some questions to ask before you decide on what system
suits your business needs:
- Does your product offer a booking engine for my sector?
- Do you charge a setup fee?
- Do you charge an annual fee or any other fees?
- What are your rates of commission (if any)?
- Do I need to host my website with you?
- Do you insert the booking system code into my website, or do
you send the code to me to deal with? Is there a charge for
- Can the system accept secure payment via major credit
- Can the system accept payment via PayPal etc?
- What customer support do you offer? Is it by
phone/email/Livechat? What are your operating hours for
- How long is the contract?
Web booking integration with your visitscotland.com
Once you have selected a booking engine that suits your needs,
you will be required to enter its details into the VisitScotland
Extranet in order to display availability.
