1. Understand who your audience is
It’s important to understand who the audience for your blog is so that you can write content that appeals to them. Different audience groups will require different types of content depending on their age and location, whether they are existing or potential customers and whether you are targeting consumers or other businesses.

 

2. Research potential topics
It’s very important to write content that is of interest to your potential readers and that they are more likely to engage with. 

 

3. Blog regularly and create an editorial calendar
By blogging regularly you have the opportunity to build up a regular readership and have a plentiful supply of content to promote on social media. Depending on the size of your business and the resources available, you may wish to blog anywhere from once a month to multiple times a week.

 

4. Writing good blog post titles
A good blog post title clearly tells the reader what to expect from the post AND encourages them to click through and read it.

 

5. Make your blog posts 300-700 words long
Search engines prefer longer form content whereas users are sometimes put off by very long articles, particularly when reading on mobile devices.  Blog posts should be at least 300 words and generally not longer than about 700 words.

Users are often put off by large unbroken blocks of text and will struggle to read your content if it is presented in this format. Embedding images and videos in your blog posts breaks up the text and makes them more readable and engaging.

Your blog posts can potentially drive large volumes of traffic from search engines like Google and Bing if properly optimised. Think about your blog titles, the body of text and how you tag each post.

To maximise the potential of your blog content , it’s very important to promote it to your wider network such as social media and newsletters.  


10. Measure the performance of your blog posts
You can use free analytics packages like Google Analytics, Facebook Insights and Twitter Analytics  to measure the performance of your blog content. Understanding what performs well and what doesn’t will allow you to better tailor your content to your audience’s preferences.
